Alex Morton from Jamie Stevens Hair in Kensington is the UK’s newest up-and-coming hairdressing styling star, winning the coveted title of Newcomer of the Year at HJ’s renowned British Hairdressing Awards 2019, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.
Her own clientele includes Zoe Hardman and Claire Richards, alongside previous experience styling for The X Factor finalists with Jamie Stevens, resident hairdresser on the show for 5 years.
Alex beat five other category finalists in the national awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the hair world, to claim the best in new talent title. The Newcomer of the Year accolade recognises the most talented young hairdresser in the country, qualified as a salon stylist and under the age of 27.
Going through vigorous judging before being rewarded for her skill, Alex was required to submit a collection of six images of original hair work to demonstrate not only her technical skill, but also creative vision and comprehension of current trends. A panel of hairdressing legends and leading national beauty press judged the collections to choose their overall winner.
Alex received the coveted title at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in front of a 1,750 strong audience of hairdressing peers, influencers and press. Celebrity host for the evening was TV personality Rylan Clark-Neal.
Alex’s collection was based on soft movement and texture, showcasing effortless, editorial looks combined with styling and cutting techniques. On accepting the award, she said “I can’t believe it! I just want to say a massive thank you to Schwarzkopf, HJ, L’Oreal Professional, and my amazing team at Jamie Stevens, everyone who made that whole shoot happen.”
